According to the EFE, a well-known New York–based dance company canceled its scheduled season at the Kennedy Center, joining other groups that have taken similar action in recent weeks.

Doug Varone and Dancers, with more than four decades of artistic trajectory, had performances planned for April 2026 at the iconic cultural venue.

The cancellation was recorded on the official website of the Kennedy Center, which was recently renamed the Trump-Kennedy Center.

Although the venue did not issue a public explanation, the company confirmed that its decision was directly tied to the name change promoted by the administration of Donald Trump.

Since February 2025, multiple artists have canceled scheduled appearances following the dismissal of long-standing Kennedy Center executives.

Venue leadership was replaced by individuals linked to the Republican Party, a move that raised concern within cultural circles.

For many artists, these changes altered the independent and pluralistic character the cultural institution had historically represented.

The cancellations have been interpreted as a symbolic form of protest against the perceived politicization of an artistic space—one reason artists cancel Kennedy Center shows.

Trump-Kennedy Center Sparks Cultural Backlash

One of the most visible cases was the cancellation by the jazz ensemble The Cookers, which had been scheduled to perform during New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Their absence left the main stage empty on a date traditionally central to the venue’s annual cultural programming.

The name change was officially confirmed on December 20 by the White House, intensifying critical reactions.

Various cultural and political figures voiced opposition, raising concerns about the political use of a long-standing cultural symbol.

Political Impact and Cultural Debate

The Kennedy Center’s original name was established by federal law, meaning any modification would typically require congressional approval.

At present, the Republican Party holds a legislative majority, increasing the political feasibility of the renaming.

Several members of the Kennedy family expressed their disagreement, arguing that the decision undermines the historical legacy of the venue.

Trump stated that he was surprised and honored by the change, although he had previously commented on the possibility of renaming the center.
